Michael Janzen is a Canadian international artist whose work focuses on cultural dialogue and collaboration. His artwork has been exhibited in Canada, Brazil, France and China. Known for his live painting performances, Janzen has combined visual art with music, dance and film since 2000. He has been invited to perform at institutions including the Wally Museum of Art, and one of his works was presented to Pope John Paul II. In 2020, the Huronia Museum in Midland, Ontario, acquired one of Janzen’s paintings, which was exhibited alongside works by members of the Group of Seven and their contemporaries. On the same evening as the unveiling of Janzen's painting, he had the honor of unveiling a painting by Arthur Lismer, a member of the Group of Seven, and delivering a lecture revealing lesser-known stories about him.
From 2009 to 2023, Janzen collaborated with dancer and choreographer Danny Grossman in Toronto and San Francisco. Grossman, a former dancer with the Paul Taylor Dance Company in New York, later founded the Danny Grossman Dance Company in Toronto. Grossman said Janzen’s work “originates from movement, which he gives form and structure, ultimately presenting beautiful, powerful and infectious compositions that are extremely impactful.” In 2023, Janzen conceived, wrote, narrated and starred in a documentary film about Canadian artist Thomas Vincent Phillips.
In February 2024, at the Huronia Museum in Midland, Ontario, Janzen co-curated and exhibited new research on Franz Johnston and other members of the Group of Seven, including collaborating artist William John Wood. He unveiled a newly donated oil painting by Franz Johnston. Later in October 2024, Janzen participated in the 4th Canadian International Arts Festival at the Greater Toronto Chinese Cultural Centre. In addition to exhibiting his own work, he curated exhibitions for several artists and served as an art advisor and lecturer for the international exhibition. During the festival, Janzen collaborated with renowned Chinese artist Liu Renqiu on two live paintings. He also contributed significantly to the exhibition catalogue, now housed in the E.P. Taylor Library at the Art Gallery of Ontario, and won the Gold Medal for Oil Painting at the festival.
Last year, in August 2025, Janzen received the LABA MIMV (Most Influential and Most Valuable) Artist award at the LABA Biennial International Arts Festival 2022–2024. Most recently on February 7th, 2026, he was honored with the LABA Blue-chip artist award.
