Artist Greenland Ge Joins the Los Angeles Beverly Arts Biennial International Art Festival
Artist Greenland Ge
Greenland Ge (Linglan Ge) is a contemporary digital artist who was born in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China in 1979. Ge graduated from Nanjing Arts Institute in 2004 with a Bachelor's degree and from Nanjing University in 2015 with a Master's degree. As early as1999, Ge used an Apple computer to practice character sketching with models, and took one of the earliest courses in China to study the use computers for digital art. Since then, Ge has been using computers for creation and has participated in the production of many film and television special effects, animations, and advertising projects. He is currently the head of the Digital Media Art Program at Nanjing Tech University, Pujiang Institute, and a member of the Jiangsu Science Popularization Artists Association.
During his studies at Nanjing University of the Arts, Ge was deeply guided by Professor Kaicheng Wu and studied painting with him for many years, laying a solid foundation in form and color. Digital art uses computers for artistic creation, presenting the final effect through digital media and various digital means. Digital painting is an important form of expression in digital art, and compared to traditional painting, digital painting uses virtual brushes to create on virtual media. However, the creation of digital painting cannot be separated from the study of traditional painting for artists. Traditional painting teaches many concepts such as lines, colors, and shapes, and plays a crucial role in artistic creation.
Unlike commercial CG and game graphics, Ge's digital art works strive to inject personal emotions and humanistic care into the images, creating three-dimensional digital paintings that reflect traditional painting charm as much as possible, and forming a relatively distinct digital art style. Three-dimensional digital painting is different from two-dimensional digital painting. In the creative process, two-dimensional digital painting is still a two-dimensional plane relationship, while three-dimensional digital painting is always created in three-dimensional space. This requires creators to have certain spatial imagination and connotation expression abilities. Just like traditional painting, the formation of digital style not only requires relatively independent methods in every aspect of artistic creation, but also requires the exploration of the connotation of artistic works. Connotation is cultivation, which is a personality trait and worldview constantly formed over
time in life. Artists need to have good artistic cultivation and a unique pioneering spirit in order to go further on their artistic journey.
Ge's digital art creation has gone through three stages. The first stage was classicism. At the beginning of creation, he would pay tribute to the masters of Western classicism. In Ge's works such as "Stealing Calligraphy" and "Two Saints Discuss Philosophy", the light and shadow atmosphere of Western classical oil painting is pervasive, especially drawing on the composition and lighting techniques of Rembrandt's oil paintings. The story of "Stealing Calligraphy" originates from a Chinese Tang Dynasty allusion, and the scene reproduces the story of Tang Dynasty official Yi Xiao deceiving the Preface Calligraphy from a Cai Bian Buddhist monk. The scene
emphasizes the dramatic conflicts between the characters. The light source is emitted from the top of the picture, focused on the Preface Calligraphy in the hands of the Cai Bian buddhist monk. The background of the picture adopts a darker color tone, and the stories behind the picture are
conveyed through body language between the characters.
The painting "Two Saints Discuss Philosophy"depicts two sages of Confucianism in China.
Confucius and Mencius founded and promoted Confucianism, and although the figures of the two eras have never met, in their artistic works, the two sages travel through time and space, sit together, and explore philosophical ideas. In the painting, Confucius's right hand points towards the distance, and his body is located slightly above the center of the picture, staring at Mencius
with bright and lively eyes. Mencius turned his head to the audience and his hands seemed to be questioning. The picture follows the composition principles of classicism, forming a stable triangular composition relationship between the characters.
The second stage is deconstruction and reorganization. At this stage of creation, the main theme is still life, which has undergone a transformation from extreme aestheticism to deconstruction and
reorganization. The series of works, "Memories of Still Life" emphasizes the ultimate aesthetic style, with time seemingly stops in the paintings, making the audience hold their breath and feel a sense of tranquility. The subsequent creations were influenced by Cubist masters such as Picasso, and the images were created through deconstruction and reorganization. The work "Beating Bulls
to Welcome Spring" depicts the traditional Chinese custom of welcoming the New Year by whipping oxen to pray for a bountiful harvest of crops in the coming year. The specific objects in the picture are decomposed into combinations of lines and blocks, and each visual element is replaced by different materials, forming the entire picture through the recombination of multiple materials. The work "Winter Solstice" symbolizes people's admiration and pursuit of the power
of nature, reconstructing the picture through dumplings, pumpkins, ancient vessels, and interwoven lines. The dumplings in the picture are no longer just a type of food, but more like totems enshrined in ancient vessels, rich in cultural connotations.
The work "Broken Procelain" is composed of broken blue and white porcelain and iron wire, emphasizing the aesthetics of fragmentation and the beauty of imperfection. Like Venus with a broken arm, nothing can be perfect. Every broken piece of blue and white porcelain is a state formed under the laws of nature. As the saying goes, existence is reasonable. From different perspectives, we can examine the world and discover the life philosophy contained within it.
The third stage is towards the contemporary era. Starting from 2020, Ge's works have placed greater emphasis on depicting and expressing the psychological states of characters. The processing of the image is more pure, with character images mostly derived from oneself
and tending towards symbolization, expressing subjective feelings and subtle psychological changes through slightly exaggerated shapes. The work "Hope" depicts a character wearing a mask, with their head slightly raised and their gaze fixed on the upper front, conveying the complex psychological state of people when facing difficulties; The work "Gaze" depicts a female character with a soft gray face and bloodshot eyes staring at the viewer, which is a portrayal of fast-paced life and has distinct characteristics of the times.
The creative inspiration for the work "Thick and Black" comes from "Thick Black Studies", which means that while maintaining principles, one must also learn to adapt to the environment and avoid failure due to excessive adherence to principles. "Thick Black" represents the positive and negative aspects of human nature, and the work reflects these personality traits through the depiction of facial expressions.
The work "Emptiness" expresses an extreme sense of emptiness through the image of a character with bizarre expressions, which is a common psychological characteristic among many people nowadays, losing themselves under the guidance of habitual thinking.
The work "Back Shadow" triggers viewers's reflection on the objective world through a pure male back image. Everyone has their own back, and each back has their own story. "Back Shadow" is not only the back of others, but also a mirror of oneself.
Ge's contemporary digital art works, like the paintings of German expressionist master Lucien Freud, depict the inner psychological characteristics of characters, explore the multifaceted nature of human nature, show psychological states such as tension, anxiety, voyeurism, and fear, convey
the power of deep human nature and subtle psychological changes, have artistic tension up to the soul, deeply explore the true state of the character's hearts, and have existentialist philosophical implications.
